EMDR Consultation: Supporting Your Professional Development

Developing Competency and Confidence as an EMDR Clinician

EMDR is a comprehensive, powerful therapeutic approach. The EMDR Basic Training provides an essential foundation in the EMDR model and protocol. Ongoing consultation supports clinicians in developing the competency and confidence needed to apply EMDR effectively with diverse client presentations.

Why Ongoing EMDR Consultation Matters

Consultation bridges the gap between classroom learning and confident clinical practice. While the Basic Training teaches the EMDR model thoroughly, consultation helps you adapt it to the complex, real-world presentations in your practice.

Consultation helps you:

  • Master the standard EMDR protocol across all 8 phases
  • Develop confidence working with diverse clinical presentations
  • Navigate challenges and blocks that arise during processing
  • Expand your capabilities beyond straightforward cases
  • Integrate EMDR with other therapeutic approaches
  • Apply EMDR to a broader range of clinical issues
  • Experience more fulfilling and effective clinical work

How I Approach EMDR Consultation

Making Complex Concepts Clear

Many clinicians find certain EMDR concepts challenging to grasp after training. In consultation, we work through complex material together until it clicks—helping you move from uncertainty to genuine understanding.

"Ross can quickly provide direction and solutions to blocked cases." — Dr. Linda Boen, LPCC Read full testimonial ↓

Developing Deep Conceptual Understanding

My consultation focuses on helping you develop deep conceptual understanding of EMDR—not just following a series of steps or protocols, but grasping the underlying principles that make EMDR work. When you understand the fundamental relationship between trauma material and adaptive material, you can troubleshoot processing challenges in the moment, adapt flexibly to what your client needs, and make informed clinical decisions rather than hoping a particular technique will work. This deeper understanding transforms consultation from learning "what to do" into developing the clinical judgment to navigate complex cases with confidence.

Supporting Your Clinical Judgment

EMDR is a structured protocol, but you're still the skilled clinician you've always been. I help you integrate EMDR with your existing therapeutic strengths rather than abandoning your clinical judgment.

"All of your advice and support was always on point, to the point, very clear and very useful." — Chris Smith, EMDR-trained Therapist Read full testimonial ↓
"I truly appreciated the EMDR consultations and found them highly insightful for understanding how to use this modality effectively." — A.R. Read full testimonial ↓

Meeting You Where You Are

Whether you're just starting out or working with highly complex cases, consultation adapts to your current learning needs. My consultation groups bring together clinicians with diverse backgrounds, training, and clinical approaches, creating rich learning opportunities through varied perspectives.

Building Mastery Over Time

Consultation provides both immediate support for challenging cases and ongoing development of deep competency—allowing you to take on more complex cases, achieve better outcomes, and experience more satisfying clinical work.

Haven't Started Using EMDR After Training? You're Not Alone.

Many clinicians complete EMDR training with every intention of using it—but then months or even years pass without taking that first step. Or they try it with a few clients, feel uncertain, and gradually stop. This situation is not uncommon, and it's exactly what consultation is designed to address. Your training investment doesn't have to sit unused.

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • "I completed training but never felt confident enough to start" — The gap between classroom learning and real-world application feels daunting
  • "I tried EMDR with a couple clients and it didn't go well, so I stopped" — Something felt off or overwhelming, and you quietly shelved it
  • "I only use it with really straightforward cases" — You stick to simple phobias or single-incident trauma because complex presentations feel too risky
  • "It's been years since my training and I've forgotten everything" — Life got in the way, and now the protocol feels distant and foggy

It's common to complete the EMDR training and then hesitate to use it confidently. The training teaches the protocol thoroughly. Consultation helps you apply it skillfully when your clients don't follow standard scenarios.

You don't need to remember everything from the training. You don't need to have perfect cases lined up. You just need support to bridge the gap from training to confident practice.

Consultation can help you:

  • Start using EMDR with clients (even if you never have before)
  • Rebuild confidence after difficult experiences
  • Expand beyond simple cases to more complex presentations
  • Reconnect with your training and build the confidence to start using EMDR with clients
  • Put your training to use in your practice

  • Complex trauma
  • Attachment-focused interventions

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I completed EMDR training years ago and haven't used it?

Consultation can help you refresh your skills and begin applying EMDR with confidence. Many clinicians restart their EMDR practice this way.

Do I need to have EMDR cases to start consultation?

Absolutely not — in fact, starting consultation before you've begun using EMDR with clients is a great idea. You'll learn from others' cases and feel more confident when you do begin.

How soon after the EMDR training should I start consultation?

As soon as possible! Starting consultation shortly after completing EMDR training helps you apply what you learned while it's still fresh and build momentum as you begin using EMDR with clients.

How can consultation help me expand what I'm able to treat with EMDR?

Consultation helps you move beyond the cases you're already comfortable with—complex PTSD, attachment trauma, working with parts. An EMDRIA Approved Consultant brings specialized expertise in advanced EMDR applications, troubleshooting stuck processing, and the clinical judgment developed through extensive experience with complex cases. We work on building your confidence and competency with presentations you might currently refer out, expanding both your clinical skills and your practice.

What Clinicians Say

"I've engaged in both group and individual consults for EMDR therapy managed and facilitated by Ross, and highly recommend both for those who seek to review and develop their EMDR skills in a supportive and knowledgeable setting. Ross makes the time for each question, and walks participants through the important foundations of EMDR and effective ways of implementing them in therapy. He does so in an empathic and supportive way that makes it easy for participants to share. Ross is highly knowledgeable in EMDR therapy and shares array of skills and ideas with participants which is very helpful. I find that his consultation and guidance can help not only those who need the mandatory 10 hours, but also those who seek to grow as skilled EMDR therapists."

— Osnat Lupesko-Persky, PhD (Clinical Psychologist)

"I couldn't be more grateful for the consultation I received from Ross Cohen! I had the opportunity to be facilitated by Ross the two times I took Philip Manfield's EMDR basic training Parts I and II. I intentionally chose him for consultation because I clearly remembered how impactful and supportive his consultation had been in the training practicum. His depth of clinical experience brings a deeply insightful perspective to every consultation session. Ross's guidance consistently reflects both his extensive clinical knowledge and his genuine respect for each consultee. One of the things I appreciated most about Ross's consultation style was the lack of pressure to perform or disclose. He consistently reminded us that participation could look different for everyone — that it was always okay to simply listen and absorb. This created a sense of safety and comfort that allowed learning to happen organically and without fear. Even when sessions were running short on time, Ross made it a point to check in with every participant, ensuring that no one felt overlooked. To me this fostered a strong sense of inclusion and connection within the group. It was clear that every clinician's presence and growth mattered to him. Ross creates a consultation environment that is supportive, thoughtful, and growth-oriented. He balances clinical depth with warmth, encourages reflection without judgment, and supports therapists in building confidence in their own clinical voice. His approach made consultation feel both professionally enriching and personally affirming. I wholeheartedly recommend Ross to any therapist seeking high-quality consultation that is depth oriented, compassionate, and inclusive."

Ross creates an open, supportive learning environment - where everyone feels respected and comfortable asking any question at any step in the process. He normalizes being a beginner and breaks everything down so it all feels manageable. I left each consult with new insight, clarity, and clear direction for client sessions - and valued the learnings gained from others' questions in the group as well. Ross brings a lot of warmth, empathy, curiosity and wisdom to the table - and is highly responsive between consults, and dependable around scheduling and communication. Highly recommend!"
